Pricing
Triple-pane windows cost between $500 and $1,500 per window.
The cost of a triple-pane window can vary widely based on frame material, style and glass type.
Triple-pane windows can reduce your energy bills and filter outside noise.
The cost of triple-pane windows can range from $500 to $1,500 for a standard installation, according to John Kinyon, the head of the Custom Exteriors window department, based in Eagle, Colorado. Kinyon added that these figures are for basic triple-pane windows with little to no additional features, such as tempered glass.
Triple-pane windows are on the pricier side due to their construction. As their name suggests, triple-pane means the window frame contains three panes of glass. Manufacturers typically fill the spacing between each glass pane with gas, such as argon and krypton, to boost their energy efficiency. In addition, these windows provide notable sound reduction.
If you notice your energy bills have increased or outside street noise is becoming a bother, replacing your windows with triple-pane windows could be worthwhile. Our team spoke with contractors, surveyed homeowners and compiled retail cost data to determine the major cost factors of triple-pane window installation.
In October 2023, we surveyed 1,500 homeowners who replaced their home’s windows within the last five years. Nearly 26% of respondents said energy efficiency was the most important feature when considering new windows.
What factors contribute to triple-pane window costs?
Triple-glazed windows come in various window types, sizes and frame materials, all affecting price. “As the size and design complexity [of triple-pane windows] increase, so does the cost,” Kinyon said.
We interviewed Kevin O’Donnell, the owner and CEO of O’Donnell Roofing based in the Philadelphia area, who called out construction and weight as cost factors you should consider. “The fact that a triple-pane window will have a third layer of glass and thus 50% more weight is a big factor in the cost,” he said.
Our team also spoke with Andrew Prchal, the president and co-founder of Gunner Roofing in Stamford, Connecticut, to get additional insight on the cost variance of triple-pane windows. He estimated these windows can cost under $500 for a basic vinyl window and up to several thousand dollars for a large bay window.
Keep in mind that prices can vary based on your location, your installer’s labor rate and additional factors related to your home.
Window frame material
The material you choose for your triple-pane window is one of the biggest factors affecting your total window replacement cost. Generally, vinyl windows are the most cost-effective, at $400 to $500 per window, according to Prchal. He added that wood frames are the most expensive, at $700 to $1,000 per window. Kinyon noted that a wood triple-pane window can cost three to six times more than a similarly sized vinyl window.
Aluminum windows offer a solid middle ground in price. We don’t recommend them if you live in an extreme climate zone, as they are poor at keeping heat and cold outside or inside your home. Fiberglass windows generally cost more than vinyl windows but less than comparable wood windows.
Material | Cost per Window |
---|---|
Vinyl | $400–$500 |
Fiberglass | $400–$550 |
Aluminum | $500–$700 |
Wood | $700–$1,000 |
Window style
The next factor affecting the cost of triple-pane glass windows is the window style. “A standard single-hung window will likely be the cheapest,” Kinyon said. He added that windows with more components and functionalities, such as casem*nt windows, will typically cost more due to their added complexity.
According to Prchal, a single-hung window can cost between $550 and $750, while a casem*nt window can cost up to $800.
Style | Cost per Window |
---|---|
Picture | $500–$650 |
Awning | $500–$700 |
Single-hung/double-hung | $550–$750 |
Sliding | $600–$850 |
Casem*nt | $650–$800 |
Bay/bow | $1,500–$2,300 |
Another factor to consider is customization. According to Robert Schindler, the vice president of marketing for Window World, customization, such as choosing the shape of your windows, will add to the overall cost of a new window.
Window size
A triple-pane window’s size is another factor affecting total installation costs. A larger window will generally cost more than a smaller window due to the extra glass and frame material used. Many window manufacturers follow standardized sizing to best fit residential windows.
A triple-pane window measuring 24 by 24 inches costs between $398 and $558 on Home Depot’s website.
Size | Cost per Window |
---|---|
24 x 24 inches | $398–$558 |
28 x 28 inches | $543–$788 |
36 x 36 inches | $509–$846 |
Installation
The type of installation, its complexity and your window installers’ labor rate greatly affect the amount you’ll pay for triple-pane windows. Prchal, based in Connecticut, disclosed that he charges $75 per hour to install a triple-pane window. However, Prchal — and other experts we spoke with — agreed that labor rates depend on several factors, such as the condition of your window sills, the number of windows you want installed and the local cost of living near you.
Depending on the condition of your current window sills, you may need a pocket or full-frame window replacement. Pocket replacements tend to be the cheapest since they simply swap the window in your sill with a new one. On the other hand, a full-frame window replacement requires replacing the window plus the surrounding window sill.
These types of window replacements require different amounts of labor and materials to complete correctly.
Our team spoke with Craig Ricks, the president of New Orleans-based Acadian Windows, and asked him about the differences between each type of window installation. He stated that you likely won’t have a choice of installation type, as the condition of your window sill will determine how your window installers will approach the project.
If you notice that your window sills are beginning to wear down, we recommend replacing your windows sooner rather than later to avoid more costly full-frame installations.
Glass type
The types of glass you equip your triple-pane windows with are another factor affecting their overall price. Some glass types, such as laminated or tempered glass, are tougher to break and don’t shatter into large, sharp pieces, increasing safety. Glass coatings, such as low-emissivity (low-e) coatings, provide better insulation than glass without low-e coatings.
Additionally, manufacturers typically fill the space between each glass pane with a gas, such as argon and krypton, to increase the window’s energy efficiency.
Window contractors typically include the extra costs of these glass features in their window pricing estimates. Low-e coatings can start at $150, according to Kinyon. He added krypton gas filling can cost at least $250 — this filling provides the most benefits for triple-pane glass and is not as effective in double-pane glass.
Glass Feature | Add-On Cost per Window |
---|---|
Argon gas filling | $150 and up |
Krypton gas filling | $250 and up |
Laminated glass | $800 and up |
Low-e coating | $150 and up |
Tinted glass | $200 and up |
Tempered glass | $500 and up |
How can you save money on triple-pane windows?
Window replacement is one of the most expensive home improvement projects you can do. Respondents from our October 2023 window survey reported paying between $5,932 and $12,970 on average for their window replacement project.
Due to their heavyweight construction and additional glass pane, triple-pane windows will likely cost more than comparable double-pane windows.
However, you can reduce the upfront cost of your window purchase. We highlight a few tips from our experts below.
Request multiple consultations
The easiest way to save on triple-pane windows is to request quotes from multiple window brands. Don’t settle for the first quote you receive from a window provider. Chances are other brands will provide a similar product in terms of quality and features at a lower price.
Sal Sucato, the owner of Scottsdale, Arizona-based DunRite Windows & Doors, recommended requesting quotes from three window brands to know their local pricing and receive a competitive rate. “Just be sure to compare prices for identical products and features,” he added.
Select simpler styles
Every window expert we spoke with agreed that the bigger and more complex the triple-pane window — including those with custom shapes or opening functions — the more you’ll pay per unit.
Unless you are concerned with curb appeal or want certain functionality from your triple-pane window, choosing simpler windows with standard sizing, such as a double-hung window, could help you save on your total project cost.
Install during the off-season
Generally, professional installers prefer replacing windows in the spring or fall because of the more comfortable ambient temperatures. However, you can potentially save on installation costs by replacing your windows during off-season months, such as the summer or winter.
Installation projects typically slow during the hot and cold months, so your local window contractor may offer services at a discounted rate during these times.
Look for promotions and rebates
Our experts’ final tip is to regularly look for any discounts from the window brands you’re interested in. Champion Windows, one of our recommended window brands, regularly offers promotional discounts on their replacement windows. Schindler recommended checking for your area’s rebates, as well as state and federal rebates.
Additionally, you can check for any tax credits or energy-efficient window incentives on Energy Star’s website. Energy Star currently has a windows and skylights tax credit, allowing you to qualify for a future tax credit just by buying Energy Star-rated windows.
How do professional and DIY costs compare?
Installing triple-pane windows yourself can significantly reduce your total project cost because you’re only buying the windows. According to our experts, however, window installation is a complicated process. “You need to have the education, knowledge and skill set in order to measure and install windows properly,” said O’Donnell.
Our team shadowed a Renewal by Andersen installation crew in Charlotte, North Carolina, in June 2024 to see the process of a typical window installation. Immediately, we noted how involved a window replacement project is. The three-member crew all worked together to remove each window the homeowner purchased and replace them with new units.
Unless you have prior knowledge and experience installing replacement windows, we suggest hiring a professional because the margin for error is much higher if you choose the DIY route.
“Improperly installed windows can cause drafts and moisture infiltration, even if [the windows you purchase] are energy efficient,” said Kevin Jung, the director of product engineering for Harvey Windows + Doors, part of the Cornerstone Building Brands family.
Most window brands have a list of third-party window installers they work with. Some companies have in-house contractors, which is the route we recommend.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of triple-pane windows?
Triple-pane windows provide the highest energy savings and noise reduction compared to double- and single-pane windows. However, if you live in a moderate climate zone, triple-pane windows could provide little to no benefit over a double-pane window. Below, we outline several pros and cons of triple-pane windows.
Pros
Highest energy efficiency
More secure than single- and double-pane windows
Condensation-resistant
Cons
Cost more than single- and double-pane windows
Bulky design can lead to higher installation costs
Not readily available in some areas
When should you replace triple-pane windows?
Knowing when to replace your windows can be difficult if there aren’t obvious signs, such as cracked glass. While your triple-pane windows may look intact, underlying issues could necessitate a full replacement. For example, your windows could allow heat in or out of your home even though they lack visible deterioration.
According to Sucato, a good way to confirm if your windows allow excess heat transfer is to touch the glass of your existing window. “Today’s modern windows feel cool to the touch from inside the home, no matter what the temperature is outside,” he said.
Other times, the window’s deterioration is easy to spot. Check the window caulking surrounding your windows. If the caulking is cracked or missing chunks, chances are there is air leakage through the deteriorated sections.
What’s next?
Triple-pane windows are the best window products companies offer because of their energy efficiency, sound-deadening properties and safety features. They come in many styles, frame materials and sizes, which can increase your home’s curb appeal and help lower your monthly energy costs.
However, these windows are expensive and best suited for areas with extreme climates, according to O’Donnell. If you live in a temperate climate zone or find triple-pane windows expensive, consider double-pane windows instead.
Before purchasing triple-pane windows, we recommend requesting quotes from multiple window brands to compare their styles, prices and installation costs. We suggest booking in-home consultations since the professionals can accurately determine whether triple-pane windows are well suited for your home.
